The prime minister arrived at Saidpur on the way to Dinajpur to inaugurate the canal excavation project.

Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman arrived at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari at 10:00am today on a flight from Dhaka, en route to Dinajpur to inaugurate the long-awaited nationwide canal excavation and re-excavation programme.

“Soon after landing at Saidpur Airport at 10:00am, the Prime Minister left for the Balrampur Sahapara area in Kaharole upazila of Dinajpur by road to launch the programme,” Saidpur Airport Manager AKM Bahauddin Zakaria said at around 10:30am.

Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly said earlier in the morning that the Prime Minister will virtually launch the nationwide canal excavation and re-excavation programme by initiating the re-excavation of a 12-kilometre canal in the Balrampur Sahapara area of Dinajpur.

In the first phase, the initiative will be carried out in 54 districts across the country, including Dinajpur.

The nationwide programme is expected to significantly improve irrigation facilities through better utilisation of conserved surface water, enhance agricultural production and generate employment opportunities in rural areas.

It will also increase the availability of surface water, reduce dependence on groundwater and strengthen water management, helping mitigate drought, floods and waterlogging in different regions of the country. Alongside canal excavation and re-excavation, comprehensive measures have been taken to improve irrigation systems, promote tree plantation, fish farming and duck farming, restore ecosystems and strengthen the canal water–dependent rural agro-economy.

Ministers, advisers, the chief whip of the Jatiya Sangsad, state ministers, whips and members of parliament will also inaugurate the programme simultaneously in the remaining districts across the country today.

Following the inauguration ceremony, the Prime Minister will visit the Faridpur graveyard in Dinajpur town.

He will pay respects at the graves of his grandfather Md Iskander Majumder, grandmother Taiba Majumder, aunt Khurshid Jahan Haque (Chocolate), and other close relatives at the graveyard.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s visit has generated considerable enthusiasm among BNP leaders, workers and activists, as well as farmers and people from different walks of life in Dinajpur.

Authorities concerned have already completed all necessary preparations for the visit.
