Mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni has become the third Bangladeshi woman to conquer Mount Everest, marking a historic achievement for the country

Nurunnahar Nimni has become the third Bangladeshi woman and the eighth Bangladeshi overall to scale Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world.

According to the Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club, she reached the summit at 5:24am Nepal time on Wednesday and proudly raised the Bangladesh flag atop Everest.

Her achievement comes 14 years after Nishat Majumder became the first Bangladeshi woman to conquer Everest on 19 May 2012. Wasfia Nazreen followed shortly after, reaching the summit on 26 May the same year.

Nimni travelled to Nepal on 11 April and made her way to Everest Base Camp via Kathmandu and Lukla.

She began her summit expedition from the base camp on 17 May, progressing through the various camps before arriving at Camp 4 on 23 May.

Although she initially attempted the final ascent that day, she was forced to turn back due to poor weather conditions.

She then remained at Camp 2 for several days awaiting better weather.

After receiving a favourable forecast on 25 May, Nimni resumed her climb and returned to Camp 4 on Monday.

She started the final leg of the ascent that evening and successfully reached the summit early Tuesday with assistance from a Sherpa guide from Nepal-based Eight K Expeditions.

Nimni is currently employed as a principal officer in the general banking division of Pubali Bank PLC, which sponsored her Everest expedition.

Originally from Rangpur, she studied geology at University of Dhaka before taking up mountaineering.
