Jamaat Chief: February Ideal for Polls, Urges No Delay Beyond April
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said that February would be an ideal time for the next national election, and if that’s not possible, polls must be held no later than April.
Speaking at a conference of district and city unit ameers at Al-Falah Auditorium in Dhaka on Saturday, he said, “We believe two windows are appropriate for the election. One is February, before the month of fasting. If necessary reforms and a visible process of justice fail to gain public trust by then, the election must still be held no later than April.”
He criticized the Awami League government, alleging that Tk 26 trillion was laundered during its rule, and called for a white paper on the matter.
Citing the six-month election timeline allowed for a chief adviser, Shafiqur Rahman pointed to logistical and seasonal constraints, noting that Ramadan—starting late February—renders March impractical for voting.
He added that with accelerated reforms and cooperation from all parties, elections could be held within the government's proposed timeframe.
