Govt plans to buy 25 aircraft from US-based Boeing: Commerce Secretary

The government has placed an order for 25 aircraft from American aerospace giant Boeing, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman announced on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters at his office in the Ministry of Commerce at the Secretariat, the secretary clarified, “The Boeing business is managed by the company itself, not the US government. We've placed an order for 25 aircraft.”

He noted that other countries like India, Vietnam, and Indonesia have also made large purchases from Boeing. “Delivery will depend on Boeing’s production capacity, so it will take some time,” he added.

The announcement comes as the United States prepares to impose additional tariffs on Bangladeshi exports starting August 1 — just five days away. Without a resolution, Bangladeshi products, especially ready-made garments, could face a 35% surcharge, posing a major threat to the country’s export sector.

Against this backdrop, analysts believe the government’s move to procure aircraft from Boeing may be a strategic attempt to ease rising trade tensions with Washington.
