Government to supply subsidised protein-rich food to 10 lakh families during Ramadan
State Minister for Fisheries, Livestock, Agriculture and Food Sultan Salauddin Tuku has announced that the government will distribute protein-rich items — including milk, eggs, meat and fish — at subsidised rates to low-income families during the holy month of Ramadan.
The programme, introduced under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is expected to benefit nearly 10 lakh families nationwide. It aims to ease financial pressure on ordinary consumers while helping stabilise market prices during the fasting month.
Tuku made the announcement this morning at the inauguration of the Ramadan food initiative at the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute in Mohakhali. Stressing the need for sincerity and commitment in public service, he said fulfilling the Prime Minister’s pledges requires honesty, dedication and collective effort to advance the country’s development and prosperity.
He observed that dishonest traders often raise prices during Ramadan, creating additional hardship for low-income families. The subsidised programme, he said, would help reduce their burden, adding that there are plans to expand the initiative in the future.
The state minister also outlined forthcoming measures such as the introduction of family cards, agriculture cards and health cards to better meet public needs, underscoring the importance of coordinated teamwork in serving citizens.
Reflecting on the country’s political history, Tuku said Ziaur Rahman, founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, secured a lasting place in the hearts of the people through his service. He also noted that Khaleda Zia endured significant hardship in her efforts to uphold democracy and protect citizens’ rights.
The event was chaired by Md Abu Sufian, Director General of the Department of Livestock. Among those present were Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Abu Taher Muhammad Zaber, BPI Central Council President Moshiur Rahman, BCFFA President Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, and other senior officials from the ministry and its departments.
