Family Card to be introduced on a pilot basis ahead of Eid: Minister Mintoo

The government is set to roll out the ‘Family Card’ on a pilot basis ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo said on Thursday.

“As far as I know, the Prime Minister wants to launch it as a pilot project before Eid,” he told reporters after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat.

Mintoo noted that the Family Card initiative was prominently featured in the ruling party’s election manifesto and that Thursday’s discussion centred on the strategy for implementing the programme.

Responding to a question about the initial number of beneficiaries, he said the scheme is designed to be universal and will not impose restrictions.

“A committee has already been formed. The programme may first be introduced for the ultra-poor, then gradually expanded to include the poor and eventually the middle class in phases,” he added.
