Dr Yunus Urges Dr Mahathir to Support Bangladesh’s Bid for ASEAN Membership

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today called on former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to support Bangladesh’s bid for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The request came during a bilateral meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the Nikkei Forum: 30th Future of Asia in Tokyo.

Briefing the media, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said Prof Yunus urged Dr Mahathir to use his global stature to help advance Bangladesh’s case for joining ASEAN. In response, Dr Mahathir reaffirmed his enduring friendship with Bangladesh and expressed his support for the country’s membership aspirations.

The two leaders also discussed a range of issues, including the Rohingya crisis. Prof Yunus extended early birthday greetings to Dr Mahathir, who will turn 100 on July 10.

They further spoke about the historic mass uprising in Bangladesh and acknowledged the professionalism and dedication of Bangladeshi expatriates, which contribute to the country’s positive international image.

Prof Yunus also invited Dr Mahathir to visit Bangladesh at his convenience.

Prof Yunus arrived in Tokyo on Wednesday afternoon to attend the Nikkei Forum and hold bilateral meetings, including with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
