Bosnia and Herzegovina coach Sergej Barbarez urged his players to take pride in their World Cup campaign despite a 2-0 defeat to the United States in the round of 32 on Wednesday.

The loss in the San Francisco Bay Area ended Bosnia's impressive run at the tournament, marking the nation's first appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.

Bosnia reached the expanded 48-team tournament through the playoffs, eliminating former champions Italy in the process. They then drew with co-hosts Canada, defeated Qatar and lost to Switzerland to advance from the group stage.

"I was really proud of them," Barbarez said after the match. "This is something we should celebrate, not be sad about. It's part of life and part of football, especially in a competition of this magnitude."

Reflecting on the defeat, Barbarez admitted the United States proved a difficult opponent, saying his side made costly errors and struggled to create meaningful chances or make the most of possession.

The coach said he was eager to return home and share the achievement with supporters.

"Video messages and phone calls are wonderful, but only when we're back among our people will we truly understand how significant this achievement is," he said.

"Even when we were two goals behind, my heart was full watching the players. What they have accomplished is truly special, and right now I feel like the proudest coach in the world."
