Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar shortly after arriving in Bangladesh for a two-day state visit.

After laying the wreath, he stood in silent tribute for a few minutes, honouring those who sacrificed their lives in the 1971 Liberation War. A contingent of the Army, Navy, and Air Force presented a state salute as a solemn bugle tune was played.

Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin, Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Adviser Supradip Chakma, and Housing and Public Works Secretary Md Nazrul Islam were present during the ceremony.

The Bhutanese premier later signed the visitors’ book and planted a Bakul sapling on the memorial grounds.

Earlier in the morning, Tobgay received a red-carpet welcome upon arrival. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus greeted him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his Drukair flight landed around 8:15am.

This afternoon, Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain and Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin are scheduled to meet Tobgay before he holds a one-on-one meeting with Chief Adviser Yunus at his Tejgaon office around 3:00pm.

Prime Minister Tobgay will also attend an official banquet in his honour later in the evening.
