Bangladesh Bank suspends dress code directive

Bangladesh Bank has withdrawn an internal advisory that encouraged staff to wear professional and modest attire.
Executive Director and spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan clarified on Thursday that no official circular had been issued and no policy-level decision was taken on the matter.
He explained that the suggestion had emerged during departmental meetings, aimed at promoting professionalism and aligning with social norms, but was never a centrally mandated directive.
“These discussions were limited to certain departments and did not represent a decision from the central authority,” Khan said.
He added that once the issue drew media attention, the Governor—who is currently abroad—expressed dissatisfaction. “Following his instructions, the advisory has been fully withdrawn,” he confirmed.
The decision appears to bring an end to the controversy and criticism sparked by the internal dress code discussions within and beyond the banking community.
