70 Killed in Gaza Despite Trump’s Call for Israel to Halt Bombing
Ahead of ceasefire talks scheduled to begin in Egypt next week, Trump said on Saturday in a post on his Truth Social platform.
Israeli strikes across the blockaded Gaza Strip have killed at least 70 Palestinians, according to medical sources, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for Israel to halt its bombardment after Hamas announced it had accepted parts of Trump’s 20-point proposal to end the war.
At least 45 of the victims were killed in bombardments and air strikes on Saturday in famine-hit Gaza City, where Israeli forces have intensified their offensive in recent weeks, forcing about one million residents to flee to the overcrowded south.
Eighteen people were killed and several others injured in an Israeli strike on a residential home in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighbourhood, medics said, adding that the blast also damaged nearby buildings.
Gaza’s civil defence agency said in a statement on Telegram that seven children aged between two months and eight years were among the dead.
Israeli forces also struck a displacement camp in al-Mawasi, southern Gaza, killing two children and injuring at least eight others.
Al-Mawasi is designated as a “safe humanitarian zone” by the Israeli military, which has been urging Palestinians to take refuge there. However, the area has been repeatedly targeted in recent weeks and months.
Air raids were also reported in other areas, including the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting from az-Zawayda.
“Hospitals are unable to treat all of these Palestinians,” she said, referring to the few remaining functional medical facilities in the north, which are struggling amid an acute fuel shortage.
“What is happening on the ground doesn’t indicate any sign of a ceasefire,” she added.
