NCP Rally in Gopalganj Attacked; Stage Vandalised, Members Assaulted
Leaders and activists of the local Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League, allegedly attacked the stage of a National Citizens' Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj on Wednesday (July 16).
The assailants vandalised sound systems, microphones, and chairs on the stage, and physically assaulted NCP members present at the event, which took place around 1:35 PM at the municipal park area in Gopalganj town.
Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Md. Sajedur Rahman confirmed the incident.
The rally was part of the NCP’s ongoing campaign titled “March for Nation Building in July,” launched on July 1. As part of this programme, the party has been organising events in various districts, including Wednesday’s gathering in Gopalganj.
On Tuesday, the party's verified Facebook page had promoted the event under the banner “March to Gopalganj – July 16.”
Earlier in the day, a police vehicle was set ablaze in the Ulpur area of Sadar Upazila. According to OC Sajedur Rahman, the attack was carried out by supporters of the banned Chhatra League faction, reportedly led by its general secretary Ataur Rahman Pial, in an attempt to prevent the NCP rally.
Although no casualties have been reported, police have since arrived at the scene to restore order.
