Thousands gather at the Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to the language martyrs
Leaders and members of different political parties, organisations, and educational institutions came to the Shaheed Minar to pay their tributes.
A large crowd gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar to honour the Language Martyrs.
Representatives from various political parties, organisations, and educational institutions arrived at the memorial on Saturday (21 February) morning to pay their respects.
At 12:01am, President Mohammad Shahabuddin placed a wreath at the altar. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman followed at 12:08am, accompanied by members of the cabinet.
After the Prime Minister’s tribute, wreaths were laid on behalf of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Zia family.
Leaders of the 11-party alliance, led by opposition leader and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Shafiqur Rahman, then paid homage. Opposition Chief Whip and Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Nahid Islam, along with other alliance MPs, were present.
Later, Cabinet Secretary Dr Nasimul Ghani, Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, and other judges of the Appellate Division offered tributes. On behalf of the armed forces, Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Mohammad Nazmul Hassan, and Air Force Chief Hasan Mahmood Khan paid homage.
Representing the University of Dhaka, Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan laid a wreath.
Among the political parties and organisations that paid tribute were the National Citizen Party (NCP), Gono Odhikar Parishad, NDM, AB Party, Jatiya Party, BJP, JP, CPB, BASAD, Revolutionary Workers Party, JASAD, JSD, and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, as well as Chhatra Union, Chhatra Front, and Chhatra Maitri, were also present at the memorial.
