A leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra Federation’s Chattogram city unit was assaulted by a "mob" on Wednesday afternoon, with attackers claiming he was an activist of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The incident occurred around 3:30 pm near Mimi Super Market in Panchlaish, Chattogram, as Shawkat Osman, an organizer of the Chattogram city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation, was returning home from a private tuition session, according to witnesses and police reports.
At that time, Mirza Faruk, member secretary of Omargani M.E.S. College unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, along with several others, allegedly gathered the mob and attacked Shawkat Osman when they found him alone.
Police responded to a call on the national emergency service, 999, and rescued him. He was later released.
Commenting on the incident, Sridham Shill, former general secretary of the Chattogram city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Federation and current central executive committee's political education affairs secretary, told Prothom Alo that MES College Chhatra Dal leader Mirza Faruq and his associates were involved in the attack. He added that a case has been filed against them.
Speaking to reporters, Mirza Faruq stated that Shawkat Osman was beaten because he resembled a Chhatra League activist.
Panchlaish police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Solaiman confirmed to Prothom Alo that a case has been filed against two individuals, including Mirza Faruq. He added that police are working to apprehend the perpetrators.
