Fakhrul: Fascist regime carried out widespread corruption under the guise of development

Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD) Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday told Parliament that the previous fascist regime had engaged in widespread corruption in the name of development.

Responding to a supplementary question from opposition lawmaker Akhter Hossen (Rangpur-4) during the question-answer session, he said it was unfortunate that large-scale corruption had taken place under the guise of mega projects during the former government’s tenure. “We have come to realise this after assuming office one month ago,” he added.

The minister also expressed regret that roads and streets in the northern region had been severely neglected. Fakhrul, who is also the BNP secretary general, assured Parliament that the current government would not tolerate such corruption in the future.

“InshaAllah, we will not allow any such irregularities going forward and will prioritise the development of rural roads and communication,” he said.

In his question, Akhter noted that rural communities were facing significant hardship due to poor road conditions, alleging that the previous government had focused on mega projects while neglecting rural infrastructure. He asked whether the current administration would take steps to improve the situation.

Replying to another supplementary question from opposition Jamaat lawmaker Md Abdul Aleem (Bagerhat-4), the minister said rural road development had been hindered by widespread corruption and nepotism under the previous regime.

He added that many rural roads remain unpaved and that the government has already initiated measures to upgrade them. “We have taken steps to gradually pave the earthen (kachha) roads,” Fakhrul said.
