"Available support and therapies for people with intellectual disabilities in China"

Medical treatment for individuals with intellectual disabilities is available at hospitals in China, including Kunming Tongren Hospital, a leading private healthcare facility in Yunnan Province that has successfully treated many such patients.

Shen Ling, Vice President of Kunming Tongren Hospital, shared that a Bangladeshi family recently brought their teenage son for treatment at the hospital. She presented a video message from the family during an exchange with Bangladeshi journalists who visited Kunming for three days, according to a press release from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

In the video, the patient’s father said he had been unable to find the required treatment in some neighbouring countries, including India, and noted that in certain countries the cost was prohibitively high. He added that in China, he found the treatment both available and affordable.

According to him, the hospital’s specialists explained the entire treatment plan in detail before starting, and the family decided to proceed after fully understanding the process.

Shen Ling emphasised that Kunming Tongren Hospital has adequate numbers of doctors and medical professionals to treat children with intellectual disabilities and also offers interpreter services to address language barriers.

A 23-member media delegation, led by Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, visited Kunming from August 6 to 9 to observe health facilities in the capital of Yunnan Province. The delegation returned home on Saturday.
