"Reovirus detected for the first time in Bangladesh"
"This discovery was made after testing patients exhibiting Nipah virus symptoms in 2024."
For the first time in Bangladesh, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has identified the presence of Reovirus in five individuals.
The discovery was made after testing patients who showed symptoms of the Nipah virus in 2024, IEDCR Director Prof. Tahmina Shirin informed UNB on Friday.
Fortunately, none of the affected individuals experienced severe illness. All five received treatment and have since recovered and returned home, she added.
The health department has reassured the public that there is no cause for concern regarding the Reovirus.
While it is common for people to contract the Nipah virus from consuming raw date juice during the winter months, the five individuals who tested positive for Reovirus were all negative for Nipah virus.
This is the first known instance of Reovirus in Bangladesh, and the disease has not spread widely.
The virus was detected as part of ongoing research by the IEDCR in collaboration with Columbia University, USA.
