Egypt has invited Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus to attend the D-8 Summit scheduled for later this year. During a meeting on Wednesday, Egypt's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Omar Mohie Eldin Ahmed Fahmy, informed Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain that Egypt will host the D-8 Summit in 2024 and extended the invitation for the Chief Adviser to participate, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey, and focuses on development cooperation among its member states.

The D-8 was officially established through the Istanbul Declaration during the Summit of Heads of State/Government on June 15, 1997. Its objectives include enhancing member states' positions in the global economy, diversifying trade opportunities, increasing participation in international decision-making, and improving living standards.

Ambassador Omar reaffirmed Egypt’s ongoing support for Bangladesh’s progress toward a better future and congratulated the Foreign Adviser on assuming his role in the interim government.

Reflecting on the strong bilateral relations, the adviser noted a productive meeting with his Egyptian counterpart during the 79th UNGA. They discussed potential collaborations to enhance bilateral ties, particularly as the two countries celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024.

Both parties agreed to focus on boosting trade and commerce, identifying agriculture, petrochemicals, textiles, and shipping as key areas for cooperation.

Omar expressed appreciation for the humanitarian assistance Bangladesh has extended to the Palestinian people, while the adviser voiced hope for increased solidarity among Arab nations and the international community in addressing the ongoing conflict.
