A Dhaka court today placed Jewel Rana, an additional superintendent of police, on a four-day remand in connection with the death of house help Liza Akter in Dhaka's Ramna area during the quota reform movement. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farjana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury issued the order after police presented Rana before the court, requesting a seven-day remand, according to a court official. Jewel Rana, 43, a former additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), was arrested yesterday from the APBn-2 in Muktagacha, Mymensingh.
On September 5, Joynal Sikder, the father of the victim, filed a case at Ramna Model Police Station against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 173 others. According to the case, Liza, 19, was shot near the Shantinagar intersection around 5:00 pm on July 18, and she passed away four days later in a hospital.
