12 Crew Rescued After Lighter Vessel Sinks in Karnaphuli River
A stone-laden lighter vessel sank in the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram on Tuesday evening, triggering a rescue operation in which all 12 crew members on board were rescued safely.
The vessel, MV Bay Harbour-2, went down at around 5:30pm near Buoy No. 5 in the Karnaphuli Channel.
According to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, rescue teams were deployed immediately after the incident was reported. Eight people were rescued in the initial operation, while four others were later brought to safety, taking the total number of survivors to 12.
The vessel was transporting a consignment of stone from Chattogram to Dhaka when it sank.
Chattogram Port Secretary Md Nasir Uddin said the vessel, owned by Bay Harbour Limited, remains partially submerged.
The exact cause of the sinking is yet to be determined. However, port authorities confirmed that the Karnaphuli shipping channel remains safe for navigation.
