Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka for Chandpur on Saturday morning on his first visit to the district since assuming office as head of government.

His motorcade departed from his Gulshan residence by road at around 8:45am, according to Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon.

Tarique is returning to Chandpur after 22 years, generating strong enthusiasm among local party leaders and activists.

Before entering Chandpur, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a roadside rally at Lakshmipur Bazar ground in Barura upazila of Cumilla at around 11:30am, Rumon said.

According to the tour itinerary, Tarique will inaugurate the re-excavation work of the Khorddo Khal canal at Uyaruk Bazar in Tamta South Union under Shahrasti upazila at 12:30pm.

Later, at 1:45pm, he will launch the re-excavation of the Bishwo Khal canal near Ghosher Hat in Kumarduli village under Shahmahmudpur Union in Chandpur Sadar upazila.

The Prime Minister will then take a break for Zohr prayers and lunch at the district Circuit House.

At around 3pm, he is expected to address a public rally at Chandpur Government College ground and distribute Family Cards.

Tarique, who also serves as Chairman of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party, is also scheduled to attend an organisational views-exchange meeting with local party leaders and activists at Chandpur Club at 5pm.

According to the Additional Press Secretary, the Prime Minister is expected to return to Dhaka by road at around 6:30pm.

He last visited Chandpur in 2004 while serving as Senior Joint Secretary General of BNP.
