Salahuddin: Govt working to bring education system up to global standards

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today said the government is working to reform Bangladesh’s education system and bring it up to global standards so that students can receive quality education and develop the skills needed to compete internationally.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists about current issues at the Home Ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat.

“The fascist Awami League government destroyed the education system by introducing practices such as automatic promotion and widespread opportunities for cheating,” he said.

“The education system was severely damaged. We are working to rebuild and improve it, although the process will take time,” the minister added.

Salahuddin said the government has given the highest priority to modernising the education sector by ensuring students receive quality, technology-based education along with practical knowledge to enhance their competitiveness in the global arena.

Commenting on recent student protests, he said misinformation circulated on social media had created confusion about the events.

He also alleged that some people were trying to “fish in troubled waters” by exploiting the student movement.

Regarding uncertainty over holding local government elections this year, the Home Minister said the government was fully prepared to conduct the polls.

“We have no doubt about holding the local government elections. We are prepared to hold them,” he said.
