PM urges DP World to invest in free trade zones, rail-based ICDs
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday invited global logistics company DP World to expand its investment in Bangladesh, particularly in free trade zones and rail-based inland container depots (ICDs), as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s trade and logistics infrastructure.
The prime minister made the proposal during a meeting with a DP World delegation led by its Board Chairman Essa Kazim at the Bangladesh Secretariat. PM’s Assistant Press Secretary KM Nazmul Haque said the discussions focused on increasing trade and investment between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates, developing port and logistics services, and advancing areas of mutual interest.
The two sides also discussed the 15-year concession agreement between Bangladesh and DP World for operating and modernising the Chattogram container terminal. Under the agreement, DP World will manage and maintain the terminal along with its overflow container yard.
The partnership is expected to modernise the facility, improve operational efficiency and strengthen Bangladesh’s overall port and logistics network, Nazmul said.
During the meeting, Tarique Rahman asked about DP World’s plans for further investment in Bangladesh, including the development of free trade zones and rail-linked inland container depots.
The DP World delegation expressed interest in pursuing cooperation and investment in these sectors.
The prime minister also encouraged DP World and other international investors to take advantage of investment opportunities in Bangladesh.
The meeting further explored ways to upgrade port infrastructure, expand regional trade and make Bangladesh’s logistics system more modern, efficient and competitive, according to Nazmul.
