Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday attended a discussion marking World Habitat Day 2026, with the programme focusing on universal housing and sustainable urbanisation.

Organised by the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, the event is being held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka under the theme “Universal Housing, Sustainable Urbanisation.”

Before joining the discussion, the prime minister planted a Swarna Champa tree on the conference centre premises.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmad Sohel Manzur, ministry secretary Md Obaidur Rahman and other senior officials are attending the programme.

As part of the World Habitat Day observance, a three-day housing fair has been arranged in the lobby of the conference centre. The fair features 157 stalls showcasing products and services from the housing and construction sectors, along with banking services and various government agencies, including RAJUK, the Department of Architecture and the Public Works Department.

The prime minister is expected to inaugurate the fair following the discussion. A seminar on planned urbanisation and sustainable housing is also scheduled to take place at the conference centre at 2:30pm.

World Habitat Day is being observed across Bangladesh through various programmes at the divisional and district levels, including the publication of a souvenir, special discussions on television and radio, and the display of banners, posters and festoons at key locations.

Bangladesh, along with countries around the world, has been observing World Habitat Day since 1986.
