The High Commission of India in Dhaka has paid tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, recalling his contributions to Bangladesh’s Liberation War and reaffirming India’s commitment to the longstanding friendship between the two neighbouring nations.

In a Facebook post marking Ziaur Rahman’s death anniversary, the High Commission described him as one of Bangladesh’s bravest sons and highlighted his historic radio broadcast during the Liberation War in March 1971.

“As the people of Bangladesh gather today in memory of one of their nation’s bravest sons – Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam – we recall his famous radio address of March 1971, which electrified the masses, inspired resistance against oppression, and paved the way for national liberation,” the post said.

The High Commission noted that the address played a pivotal role in rallying and motivating the people of Bangladesh during the struggle for independence.

It also underscored the deep-rooted ties between Bangladesh and India, forged through shared sacrifices and common aspirations.

“Today, as then, India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh in a story of shared sacrifice and a common pursuit of progress and prosperity for both nations,” the statement added.

The tribute came as people across Bangladesh observed the death anniversary of former president and sector commander Ziaur Rahman, honouring his contributions to the country’s independence and development.
