The High Court (HC) on Sunday issued a rule seeking an explanation as to why directives should not be issued for the appointment of female morgue attendants (doms) to conduct autopsies on the bodies of women.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan issued the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Monir Uddin.

"The court has directed the respondents to submit their replies within two weeks," Monir, who also appeared before the court on behalf of the petitioner, told reporters.
