Ex-Brazilian President Bolsonaro Sentenced To 27 Years In Prison

Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for allegedly conspiring to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022.
Four of the five justices found him guilty on all charges, while one voted for acquittal.
Bolsonaro, 70, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, is currently under house arrest. Seven others—including former ministers and military officers—were also convicted.
Bolsonaro insists he is the target of political persecution. The verdict has drawn global attention, with former US President Donald Trump voicing surprise and criticism, pointing to Bolsonaro’s alleged harassment and recalling his earlier decision to impose tariffs on Brazilian goods.
