Barapukuria Power Plant Shuts Down After Fire, Technical Faults
Power generation from Unit-2 of the plant has remained suspended since 2020 due to technical problems.
Power generation at all units of the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur has been suspended following a fire incident and technical problems.
The fire broke out at around 5:10am on Tuesday after a short circuit occurred in the power line of the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) section of Unit-1. The incident caused Unit-3, the plant’s operational 275MW unit, to suddenly trip, bringing power generation across the entire plant to a halt, Chief Engineer Md Abu Bakkar Siddik confirmed.
“Efforts are underway to resume power generation as soon as possible,” he said.
Generation at Unit-2, meanwhile, has remained suspended since 2020 due to technical issues.
Plant sources said Unit-1, with a capacity of 125MW, and Unit-3, with a capacity of 275MW, had recently been operational.
Before the shutdown, Unit-1 was supplying 65MW to the national grid, while Unit-3 was contributing 170MW.
