The interim government is dedicated to recovering the stolen funds and returning them to the country.
In a statement issued by the press office of Bangladesh's Interim Government Chief Adviser on Tuesday night, it was emphasized: "We remain fully committed to accountability and justice. We will collaborate with global partners to ensure that the stolen money is returned to the people of Bangladesh."
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed the views of the vast majority of the country's citizens. He stated that properties and assets tied to stolen Bangladeshi funds, particularly those connected to individuals from the previous regime, must be thoroughly investigated.
"If these assets are found to have been acquired through embezzlement, we expect them to be returned to Bangladesh, where they rightfully belong," he added.
In his remarks to The Sunday Times of London, Professor Yunus also stated that while Tulip Siddiq may not have fully understood the origins of the money and property she enjoyed in London, she is now aware and should seek forgiveness from the people of Bangladesh.
The interim government is actively cooperating with international law enforcement agencies to investigate and recover the stolen funds. This collaboration is crucial in dismantling transnational networks involved in financial crimes.
"We hope and expect all friendly nations, including the UK, to support the people of Bangladesh in seeking justice for these crimes. Corruption benefits only those who commit it—and sometimes their relatives and cronies," the statement added.
The ongoing investigation into the $5 billion misappropriation linked to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant highlights the scale of corruption under the previous administration. The misuse of public resources in this and other projects has not only deprived the people of Bangladesh but also hindered the country's progress toward economic stability.
"The billions of dollars stolen from Bangladesh rightfully belong to its people. We will continue working with our international partners to ensure justice is served," the statement concluded.
