Seven killed after rice-laden truck plunges into ditch in Daudkandi
At least seven people were killed in a tragic road accident in Daudkandi, Cumilla.
The incident took place around 3:00am on Monday in the Hasanpur area along the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, when a rice-laden truck lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch.
The deceased have been identified as Afzal Hossain (35), son of Md Azad from Khalibpur under Nawabganj Police Station in Dinajpur; Sohrab Hossain (40), son of Alam from the same village; Salek (45), son of Fazlur Rahman; Suman (21), son of Palash from Bhaighar in Birampur upazila; Bishnu (35) from the same area; Abu Hossain (30), son of Majirul Islam; and Abdur Rashid (55), son of Rakibullah.
Daudkandi Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Bahar confirmed the matter. According to highway police and local sources, the truck was en route from Dinajpur to Chattogram carrying rice when the driver lost control in the Hasanpur area, causing the vehicle to overturn and fall into a deep roadside ditch.
Several passengers were reportedly sitting atop the sacks of rice, having boarded the truck in order to travel at a lower cost.
