Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said the government is working to transform Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) into a more people-friendly, professional, and accountable force.

“We have undertaken various initiatives to reform RAB as a more pro-people and accountable force,” he said while addressing a programme marking the elite force’s 22nd founding anniversary at the RAB headquarters in Uttara.

The minister said the government aims to strengthen public trust in RAB through greater public engagement, transparency, accountability, and adherence to human rights, the rule of law, and professional ethics.

He said several reform measures have already been taken, including enhancing members’ professional skills, ensuring minimum use of force during operations in line with international standards, and providing training on human rights and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in crime prevention.

Ahmed also announced plans to establish a specialised training centre for RAB at Jungle Salimpur in the near future.

Referring to allegations of misconduct during the previous “fascist regime,” the home minister said that while some officers had been involved in unlawful activities, the entire institution should not be judged by the actions of a few individuals.

He stressed that there would be no political interference in the operations of state institutions under the current democratic government.

The minister further said the government is considering amendments to the existing law governing RAB and may even change the force’s name as part of broader reforms.

“Steps are also being taken to enact a dedicated RAB law and modernise the force in line with global standards,” he added.

Zahed Ur Rahman attended the programme as the special guest.

Md. Ali Hossain Fakir also spoke at the event, while Md. Ahsan Habib Palash delivered the welcome address.

Chiefs of the three armed services, senior officials of the Home Ministry, and other military and civilian officials were present at the function, according to a Home Ministry press release.
