Land Secretary: Public Service Ordinance to Be Repealed Following CA’s Return

The final decision to repeal the Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance-2025 will be made after Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus returns from Japan, Senior Land Secretary ASM Saleh Ahmed said on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he noted that the Cabinet Secretary has been briefed on the demands of government employees and that a discussion on the issue took place on Tuesday. However, Saleh Ahmed clarified that the Cabinet Secretary lacks the authority to make a final decision and will instead present the matter to the Chief Adviser upon his return.

Prof Yunus left for Japan late Tuesday and is expected back on May 31, the secretary added.

Meanwhile, government employees protesting against the ordinance suspended their planned demonstrations for Wednesday following a meeting with three secretaries on Tuesday afternoon. Saleh Ahmed confirmed that discussions were held with the agitating staff but said no final resolution had yet been reached.

Earlier that day, government workers had staged demonstrations near the Secretariat for a fourth consecutive day. In response to the unrest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police tightened security, restricting visitor access and only allowing journalists into the Secretariat premises in the afternoon.
