July Charter implementation debate should be resolved: Mirza Fakhrul

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said the debate over the implementation of the July Charter should come to an end, alleging that attempts are being made to create confusion surrounding the charter.

He made the remarks while addressing the 'July Martyr Journalist Honouring Ceremony', organised by the National Editors Council at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka.

Calling on opposition parties to join the Constitution Amendment Committee, Fakhrul said differences over the July Charter should be resolved through dialogue. He stressed that the opportunity created by the July Movement to build a new state must be translated into reality.

"We are confident that we will be able to build a state based on justice. The government is trying to implement the promises made by the BNP," he said.

Fakhrul also emphasised the need to establish, through parliamentary discussions, a political framework that would spare future generations from resorting to violence.

The BNP Secretary General urged opposition lawmakers to move beyond a mindset of opposing every government initiative and instead engage constructively in the legislative process.

Referring to what he described as a culture of sycophancy across various institutions, including the media, Fakhrul said meaningful reforms are needed to overcome the practice.

He added that it would not be possible to erase the impact of what he called 16 years of misrule in such a short period.
