Ishraque’s Resignation Sends a Strong Warning to Others

With several cabinet members and a lawmaker losing their positions within just seven months, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sent a clear warning to ministers and lawmakers of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) that misconduct and political controversies will carry consequences.

The resignation of State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain has further reinforced the message that the government will not tolerate misconduct, abuse of authority or political actions that could damage the party’s reputation.

Political analysts believe Tarique Rahman, who also chairs the BNP, is pursuing a zero-tolerance approach towards wrongdoing by members of his government and party. The strategy, they say, reflects his electoral commitment to ensuring accountability to the people.

Facing mounting criticism over his participation in an anti-drug operation while carrying a firearm, Ishraque submitted his resignation on Monday after speaking with the prime minister. The move is widely seen as an attempt to prevent further embarrassment for the ruling party.

Ishraque, the eldest son of Sadeque Hossain Khoka, the last mayor of the undivided Dhaka City Corporation, announced his decision at a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday.

"I met the prime minister and told him that, effective today, I have voluntarily sought release from my responsibilities as state minister for the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs," he said.

He explained that he wanted to devote his full attention to combating drugs in Dhaka-6 and surrounding areas, as well as other areas where his involvement might be needed. He also expressed his intention to work on broader problems affecting people's lives across the country.

Ishraque said he had visited Gandaria on Saturday as part of a coordinated social resistance campaign against drugs involving local residents and law enforcement agencies.

According to him, the operation was a joint initiative agreed upon by police, local politicians and community leaders. He also maintained that he had raised the firearm in self-defence.

The incident occurred near Gandaria Railway Station in the Dhaka-6 constituency. A video of the operation, shared on Ishraque's Facebook page, quickly went viral and triggered widespread criticism and debate across the country.

Following the controversy, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman asked Ishraque to resign from his ministerial position on Sunday.

At Monday's press conference, Ishraque complained that media coverage had concentrated on his possession of a firearm rather than the operation's primary objective of combating drug trafficking.

"I told the prime minister that I wanted to resign so that I could continue the anti-drug campaign," he said.

He added that the prime minister had encouraged him to continue the initiative and work to resolve other problems affecting people in his constituency.

Concluding the press conference, Ishraque reaffirmed his commitment to the anti-drug campaign, describing it as a long-term effort that would require sustained cooperation.

He urged local residents and the relevant authorities to work together to combat drug trafficking and address other public concerns in Dhaka-6 and neighbouring areas.

Ministers Under Close Watch

Excluding the prime minister, the government currently has 26 full ministers. It previously had 24 state ministers, but Ishraque's resignation has reduced that number to 23.

The latest development follows the resignation of reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti and the removal of Zahir Uddin Swapon from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Dipen Dewan from the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs.

A BNP joint secretary general, speaking to the Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, said at least two or three ministers and several lawmakers were under the prime minister's close scrutiny.

The party leader warned that those individuals could face similar consequences if they were found to have misused state power.

According to the leader, Tarique Rahman is also considering a cabinet reshuffle ahead of the government's first anniversary. Ministers' performance is reportedly being assessed as part of preparations for the potential changes, which could bring several new faces into the cabinet.

The BNP leader said the prime minister had pledged in his election manifesto to establish a system in which ministers and lawmakers would be accountable to the people. The recent decisions, the leader added, demonstrate his determination to fulfil that commitment.

As the BNP-led government approaches its first anniversary, speculation about a broader cabinet reshuffle is intensifying. Several senior party leaders believe the prime minister wants to strengthen discipline and accountability within both the government and the ruling party.

Earlier, the prime minister removed Zahir Uddin Swapon and Dipen Dewan from their ministerial positions, reportedly over concerns about their performance.

The cabinet reshuffle also followed Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's election as president. Rashiduzzaman Millat was subsequently elevated to full minister and assigned the Civil Aviation and Tourism portfolio, while former minister Afroza Khanom Rita was transferred to the Food Ministry.

On October 1, the prime minister also asked BNP reserved-seat lawmaker Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti to step down from Parliament following allegations of her involvement in an attack, looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP health centre in Dhaka's Mirpur area.

Speaking to the Daily Sun, BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu praised the prime minister's actions as evidence of his commitment to accountability.

"Our party Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has set an example of his zero-tolerance policy by taking steps against such political anomalies, and he also sent a tough and stern message to his party's rank and file to stay away from wrongdoing," Dudu said.

He expressed confidence that the decisions would benefit both the public and the government, adding that people across the country would appreciate the move.

"Our party founder, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, used to say that a party is greater than the individual and the country is greater than the party. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has upheld that principle by removing these ministers and a lawmaker," he added.

'Not Enough to Curb the Misuse of State Power'

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the prime minister had established an important precedent by removing Ferdousi Ahmed Mishti from Parliament and Ishraque Hossain from the cabinet.

However, he cautioned that these measures alone would not be sufficient to prevent the misuse of state power.

"I think the government is embarrassed by such misuse of power by its minister and lawmaker," said Iftekharuzzaman, who heads the Bangladesh chapter of the anti-corruption watchdog.

He described the prime minister's decisions as a positive development, despite their limitations, because they established a precedent for taking action against ministers and lawmakers over abuses of authority.

Nevertheless, he stressed that the ruling party needed to adopt a sustained approach to internal reform and accountability to address such problems effectively.

"The ruling party must adopt a long-term policy of self-correction and accountability to address the situation, a challenge that will serve as a litmus test of its commitment to reform. Otherwise, it will be suicidal for both the party and the government," he said.

The developments have placed the government's commitment to accountability under greater scrutiny, with Ishraque's resignation serving as another indication that political controversies and alleged abuses of authority could have consequences for those holding public office.
