Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is committed to strengthening friendship and cooperation with all countries while protecting Bangladesh’s national interests and dignity. He also emphasised efforts to modernise the armed forces and develop a defence system capable of responding to evolving global challenges.

The prime minister made the remarks on Sunday during a ceremony at Savar Cantonment, where he handed over the national flag to seven units of the Bangladesh Army.

Tarique Rahman described the national flag as a symbol of the country’s independence, sovereignty and sacrifices, stressing that every soldier bears the responsibility of preserving its honour.

He said the government was continuing its efforts to build a technologically advanced, skilled, disciplined and professional armed force, noting that military strength alone was not enough without effective leadership, ethical values, competence and public trust.

Earlier, the prime minister arrived at Savar Cantonment from his Gulshan residence at around 9:15am, where Army Chief General Waqar-Uz-Zaman received him.

A contingent of army personnel presented the prime minister with a guard of honour, after which he exchanged salutes with the soldiers.

He subsequently presented the national flag to seven units of the Army’s 9th Infantry Division.
