Overcoming fears and anxieties, Sharadiya Durgotsav, the largest religious festival of the Hindu community, was celebrated peacefully across Bangladesh. The grand festival concluded amid joy, enthusiasm, and the poignant melodies of farewell as devotees bid adieu to Goddess Durga. On Wednesday evening, the immersion of the idols marked the conclusion of the celebrations.

According to Hindu beliefs, the true significance of Bijoya Dashami lies in overcoming the demonic tendencies within the human mind, including desire, anger, malice, and greed. The occasion serves as a reminder to abandon these negative impulses, strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, and work towards establishing peace throughout the world.

The Sharadiya Durgotsav began on October 16 with Chandi Path, Bodhan, and Adhibas on Shashthi tithi, welcoming the arrival of Anandamoyee, the goddess of joy. For the following five days, devotees offered prayers and paid their respects to Goddess Durga at puja mandaps across the capital and other parts of the country. The festivities culminated in the immersion of the idols on Dashami.

This year's Durga Puja was more festive than in previous years. Apart from a few isolated incidents, the celebrations proceeded peacefully, allowing devotees to participate without the widespread fear and anxiety that had overshadowed previous occasions. For the first time, the government declared a five-day holiday for the festival and increased financial grants allocated to puja committees.

Another significant development was the Prime Minister's personal visits to Durga Puja mandaps in districts outside Dhaka. Never before in Bangladesh's history had a head of government undertaken such visits across multiple districts to participate in the celebrations. The initiative generated considerable enthusiasm among the Hindu community, reinforcing their sense that the government stood firmly beside them.

Restoring Confidence Through Security Measures

Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh had faced considerable uncertainty and anxiety in recent years. Particularly over the previous two years, members of the Hindu community experienced a number of disturbing incidents surrounding their religious festivities. Against this backdrop, ensuring a peaceful celebration became a significant challenge for the government.

The BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, took extensive security measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. Nearly 6,500 Special Reserve Battalion (SRB) personnel were reportedly deployed across the country each day to maintain security at puja mandaps and surrounding areas. Visible patrols were conducted using 550 pickup vehicles and 400 motorcycles.

Intelligence surveillance was intensified nationwide, while SRB dog squads and bomb disposal units carried out necessary searches at important puja mandaps and other sensitive locations. Special teams were kept on standby to respond to emergencies, supported by additional reserve personnel.

These preventive measures contributed to a peaceful festival, with no reported incidents of vandalism during this year's celebrations.

The importance of such precautions becomes clearer when viewed against the backdrop of previous incidents. Following the fall of the Awami League government, 46 incidents involving puja mandaps were reported between August 5 and October 9, 2024, resulting in 17 cases and 21 general diaries (GDs). A separate breakdown of 47 reported incidents recorded 30 cases of vandalism, four thefts, three incidents of arson, and 10 other incidents. A total of 19 people were arrested.

Last year, too, reports of idol vandalism emerged from different parts of the country ahead of Durga Puja. Fear spread among devotees, prompting some puja committees to close their mandaps. Rumours further aggravated tensions and contributed to attacks targeting members of the Hindu community.

This year, concerns persisted that vested interest groups might attempt to disrupt the celebrations and embarrass the government through acts of violence. The recurring incidents of idol vandalism in previous years had left many Hindu families apprehensive about whether they could observe their most important religious festival in safety.

The broader question was whether the influence of extremist elements would continue to threaten religious minorities even under a democratically elected government led by Tarique Rahman. Such concerns made it particularly important for the authorities to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the religious freedom and security of every citizen.

Prime Minister's Visits Send a Message of Harmony

Recognising the importance of restoring public confidence, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took the initiative to visit Durga Puja mandaps in several districts. On Navami, the final day of the principal worship celebrations, he travelled to Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Chattogram to convey a message of communal harmony and national unity.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister visited several puja mandaps in the northern region, including the Radhagobind Dharmasabha Temple in Rangpur. Upon arriving, he greeted members of the Hindu community, exchanged pleasantries with devotees, and acknowledged the enthusiastic reception. Responding warmly to requests from visitors, he also posed for selfies with them.

From Rangpur, Tarique Rahman travelled to Rajshahi, where he visited the Durga Puja mandap at the Dharmasabha Temple. There, he interacted with priests and conveyed his greetings to members of the Hindu community.

Later that evening, at around 8:20pm, the Prime Minister arrived at J.M. Sen Hall in Chattogram, where the Chattogram Metropolitan branch of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad has been organising Durga Puja for the past four decades.

Leaders of the Parishad noted that it was the first time a sitting Prime Minister had visited J.M. Sen Hall to witness the Durga Puja celebrations.

His arrival added a new dimension to the festive atmosphere. People gathered along both sides of the street to welcome him, blowing conch shells and raising traditional uludhwani in celebration. The enthusiastic reception reflected the significance of the visit for the local Hindu community.

Beyond its historic character, the Prime Minister's tour carried a broader political and social message. His speeches in the three districts outlined his vision of a Bangladesh in which citizens of different religious beliefs, political opinions, social backgrounds, and professions could coexist peacefully and contribute equally to national development.

His message also reflected the principle of putting Bangladesh first, placing national unity and the collective interests of its people above divisions of religion, ideology, and political affiliation.

A Vision of an Inclusive Bangladesh

Addressing gatherings during his visits, Tarique Rahman highlighted the contributions of people from different religious and social backgrounds to Bangladesh's Liberation War in 1971 and subsequent struggles for democratic rights.

He observed that people had fought for the country's independence without allowing religious identity to determine their participation. Similarly, during movements to establish democratic rights, people from different religions, classes, and professions had joined hands in pursuit of a common cause.

Referring to the mass uprising of 2024, the Prime Minister emphasised that people from diverse backgrounds had once again united, irrespective of political affiliation, personal beliefs, religion, or creed.

His remarks underscored a fundamental aspect of Bangladesh's national identity: the country's strength lies in the diversity of its people and their shared commitment to a common future.

Tarique Rahman noted that people belonging to different religious communities had lived together in Bangladesh for generations. He stressed the need to preserve this tradition and ensure that everyone could continue to live in peace and security.

"If we want to build our expected Bangladesh in the days ahead, people of all religions and opinions must work together for the country to build that desired Bangladesh," he said.

The Prime Minister also emphasised the importance of fulfilling people's expectations by expanding access to education, healthcare, and employment. At the same time, he urged citizens to work collectively to maintain peace, stability, and security throughout the country.

He reiterated that people wanted stability, peace, and security, adding that the government was working towards achieving these objectives.

These statements reflected a political approach that places national cohesion and public welfare at the centre of governance. By emphasising shared aspirations rather than religious or political differences, the Prime Minister sought to reinforce the idea that Bangladesh belongs equally to all its citizens.

A Step Towards Building a Bangladesh for Everyone

The peaceful conclusion of this year's Durga Puja represents an encouraging development for a community that has experienced uncertainty and insecurity during previous celebrations. The government's security arrangements, increased support for the festival, and the Prime Minister's personal visits to puja mandaps collectively conveyed a message of reassurance and inclusion.

Tarique Rahman's initiative demonstrated that protecting religious minorities requires more than statements of solidarity. It also calls for effective security arrangements, visible engagement with communities, and a sustained commitment to ensuring that every citizen can practise their faith without fear.

His visits to Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Chattogram, accompanied by his emphasis on national unity, offered a public expression of that commitment. For many members of the Hindu community, the gestures served as a reminder that their religious and cultural traditions form an integral part of Bangladesh's national fabric.

Ultimately, the significance of Durga Puja extends beyond religious rituals and festivities. Its message of the triumph of good over evil also offers an opportunity to reflect on the need to overcome intolerance, hatred, and division in society.

By helping create an atmosphere in which devotees could celebrate with greater confidence, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has taken a meaningful step towards realising his vision of an inclusive Bangladesh. Sustaining this progress will require continued vigilance, equal protection under the law, and a consistent commitment to communal harmony.

A Bangladesh where people of every faith can celebrate their festivals peacefully, pursue their aspirations, and live with dignity is not merely a political vision. It is an essential foundation for a stable, democratic, and prosperous nation.
