Tarique Rahman has formally taken over as Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following the death of party Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

The decision was unanimously endorsed on Friday night at a meeting of the BNP Standing Committee held at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan.

The BNP chairmanship became vacant after Khaleda Zia’s passing, prompting the convening of a meeting of the party’s National Standing Committee in line with the party constitution to manage the leadership transition.

At the meeting, the committee unanimously resolved to appoint Tarique Rahman to the vacant position. The decision, taken in accordance with the party’s charter, formally confirmed him as BNP chairman.

Under Article 7 (Ga), sub-clause 3 of the BNP constitution, if the post of chairman becomes vacant for any reason, the Senior Vice Chairman assumes the role for the remainder of the term and continues in office until a new chairman is elected as per constitutional provisions.

In line with sub-clause 2 of the same article, Tarique Rahman has been serving as Acting Chairman since 8 February 2018, following Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment.
