Two more individuals rescued from a vessel in the Meghna River succumbed to their injuries at a hospital in Chandpur, raising the death toll to seven.

Doctors at a Chandpur hospital reported that all the deceased had their throats slit and bore injuries inflicted by sharp weapons.

Earlier in the day, members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard recovered five bodies from inside a launch anchored near the Meghna River bank in Chandpur.

Chandpur River Police Superintendent Saeyd Mushfiqur Rahman confirmed the incident to the Daily Sun in the afternoon.

The river police official suggested the attack might be linked to longstanding enmity.

Law enforcement also rescued three injured individuals and transported them to Chandpur Sadar Hospital, where they remain in critical condition.

The bodies were recovered from the MV Al-Bakhera, a fertiliser-laden vessel traveling from Chattogram to Dhaka, around 3:00 pm, according to Rahman.

He added that the launch was attacked by miscreants sometime during the night or early morning. The attackers reportedly hacked eight individuals indiscriminately and fled the scene without encountering resistance.
