Families of martyrs from the July Uprising block Shahbagh
Dozens of family members of martyrs from the July Uprising have blocked the Shahbagh intersection, demanding justice and official recognition for their loved ones’ sacrifices. Holding photos of the deceased and placards calling for justice, the protesters accused the government of ignoring their plight. They called for the immediate extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India to stand trial for the July massacre. "We have gone from door to door seeking justice and recognition for our martyrs, but instead of compassion, we were met with disrespect," said one protester, whose son was killed during the uprising. The families also claimed they had been trying to meet with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus for months but had been denied access. "We recently went to Jamuna [the official residence of the chief adviser], but his officials made us wait for six hours and then turned us away without a meeting," said another protester.
The families also denounced the ongoing trials related to the uprising, calling them a "circus." They said that many of the individuals responsible for orchestrating the deadly crackdown have yet to face justice. "Most of the perpetrators are still free. This is an insult to those who gave their lives for this nation," they stated.
The protesters have pledged to remain at Shahbagh until their demands are addressed. These include official recognition for the martyrs, fair compensation for their families, and prompt legal action against all those responsible for the violence.
