The UN reaffirms its support for Dr. Yunus-led reform initiatives in Bangladesh.

Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin, during his first visit to New York, expressed gratitude to UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, for reaffirming the UN's strong support for the reform initiatives led by Professor Muhammad Yunus and Bangladesh's interim government. He described the UN's backing as "crucial" for achieving the goals of the July-August revolution.
During their meeting, they discussed Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peace efforts and the Rohingya crisis. The Foreign Secretary emphasized the need for "global attention and action" to resolve the Rohingya issue and expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict in Myanmar, which is causing a new influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh. He urged the UN to take a more active role in resolving the crisis and facilitating the repatriation of Rohingyas. He also reiterated Bangladesh's full cooperation with the UN Special Envoy and requested support for an international conference on the Rohingya crisis, a proposal put forth by Professor Yunus.
In response, DiCarlo commended Bangladesh's role in peacekeeping and expressed hope that the new Special Envoy, Julie Bishop, would continue working with all stakeholders on the Rohingya issue. She also offered further cooperation to advance Bangladesh's reform efforts in key areas.
Earlier, the Foreign Secretary addressed the Third Committee of the General Assembly, where he emphasized the importance of investing in women’s education and skills development, highlighting Bangladesh’s initiatives on gender parity, female education, and economic empowerment. He reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to the 1995 Beijing Declaration, CEDAW, and the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, noting Bangladesh's key role in the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 in 2000. Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, was also present at the meeting with the Under-Secretary-General.
