The UN Resident Coordinator has promised support for the ICT trial process
The UN has expressed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh's efforts in advancing transitional justice to prevent the recurrence of atrocities.
On Sunday, Gwyn Lewis, the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, assured the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of the UN's ongoing support to ensure the smooth conduct of the trial processes.
According to ICT Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam, Lewis emphasized that the UN would offer as much support as possible to facilitate the trial, recognizing the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh for justice.
Earlier that morning, Gwyn Lewis met with the ICT prosecution team at the chief prosecutor's office. During the meeting, they discussed topics related to justice, human rights, and accountability.
Tajul Islam explained that the UN envoy inquired about the current stage of the trial and investigation processes, seeking to understand any challenges faced and whether any further cooperation from the UN was needed. She also asked about the steps being taken to ensure transparency and neutrality in the trial.
Lewis expressed the United Nations' commitment to supporting Bangladesh's efforts in advancing "transitional justice" and holding perpetrators of past atrocities accountable. She emphasized the ICT's role in promoting justice, reconciliation, and aligning with international human rights standards.
Tajul Islam provided an overview of the tribunal’s progress, challenges, and its efforts to deliver justice to victims of crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during the War of Liberation. He reaffirmed the tribunal's commitment to transparency and due process in its work.
The meeting also highlighted the need for training programs for the ICT prosecution and investigation agencies. Tajul Islam noted that any UN support in this area would be valuable and requested continued support for the trial process. Lewis assured that technical and training assistance would be provided.
The meeting was attended by UN Senior Human Rights Adviser to Bangladesh, Huma Khan, and members of the ICT prosecution team, including Gazi MH Tamim, BM Sultan Mahmud, Abdullah Al Noman, and Shaikh Mahdi.
