Meeting with Chief Adviser: BNP Issues Warning to Government Over Potential Constitutional Crisis

On Wednesday, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) urged the interim government to ensure that no new constitutional or political crisis emerges in the country.

A three-member delegation from the BNP delivered this message during a meeting with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser to the interim government, at the Jamuna state guesthouse in Dhaka. The delegation, which included BNP standing committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Salahuddin Ahmed, met with the chief adviser around 11:00 am and left the guesthouse shortly before noon.

The meeting was also attended by law adviser Asif Nazrul and Mahfuz Alam, special assistant to the chief adviser. Following the meeting, Nazrul Islam Khan spoke to reporters.

When asked whether the topic of the president’s resignation came up during the discussions, Nazrul Islam Khan replied, “We did not specify anything. We emphasized that everyone must remain vigilant to prevent any constitutional or political crisis from arising in the country.” He further expressed concerns about the resurgence of fallen authoritarianism and the potential for these forces to create crises through various strategies.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening national unity to protect the democratic gains achieved through struggle and sacrifice. “It is essential to form a stronger coalition among all political parties, professional organizations, and student groups to prevent any constitutional or political crises. We must all stay alert on this matter,” he added.

Nazrul Islam Khan noted that if supporters of the ousted regime attempt to instigate a crisis, democratic political parties and various organizations will confront it collectively.

Regarding the discussions' content, he mentioned that they talked about swift reforms, the implementation of consensus-based reforms, and quickly addressing the current crises faced by the people, with a primary focus on restoring democracy, which is the core aim of their movement.

He stated, “We discussed the current situation in the country and the reform processes underway to create an election-friendly environment for restoring democracy… the formation of a people’s government through elections that incorporate these reforms as soon as possible.”

Nazrul Islam Khan concluded by urging the government to take an active role in alleviating the hardships faced by people due to rising commodity prices and other crises.
