Jamaat ameer calls for a trial over the killings and repression that occurred under the authoritarian rule of the Awami League (AL)
He states that over the past 15 years, the Awami League has carried out the most atrocities and acts of torture against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has called for trials of all killings and acts of repression committed by the ousted authoritarian Awami League government.
He stated, "Over the past 15 years, the Awami League has carried out the most heinous atrocities and torture against Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Thousands of leaders and activists have been killed or imprisoned, and many homes have been demolished. We demand justice for all these killings and abuses," he said at a workers' conference at Rajendra College Ground in Faridpur on Sunday.
Dr. Rahman emphasized that true patriots do not flee their country, but the Awami League has destroyed the nation and abandoned it. "They looted the country and smuggled money abroad in the name of development. They killed and tortured those who protested. We will never forget the history of our children who stood up and fought back," he added.
Speaking at another workers' meeting in Eastern Jute Mills Sramik Maidan in Khulna, organized by the Khan Jahan Ali Thana unit of Jamaat, Dr. Rahman stressed the importance of national unity. "This country belongs to everyone, not just one individual. The damage and destruction of the past 15 years still haunt us. To move forward, the nation must unite and work together," he said.
He also highlighted the need for the country to focus on agriculture and industry for true development, rather than dependency. "We want a friendly neighboring state, not a master. We do not want to see any aggressive hands," he added.
Dr. Rahman accused the Awami League of destroying two patriotic organizations: first, by killing 57 army officers during the "BDR mutiny," and then by executing top Jamaat leaders. However, he praised the peace-loving students and people of the country for responding to this repression through the July-August mass uprising.
He further warned that the allies of the Awami dictatorship continue to instigate efforts to destabilize the nation. "We must not fall into their trap. No matter how many conspiracies arise, they must be thwarted," he asserted.
The Jamaat leader concluded by saying that the country is not yet free from corruption and autocracy. "Therefore, the unity of the people is essential to address the national challenges," he added.
