The press wing of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has clarified that his recent comments about "pressing the reset button" during an interview with Voice of America have been misinterpreted by some individuals. According to the statement released on Thursday, Prof Yunus did not intend to dismiss Bangladesh's proud history. Instead, when he spoke of pressing the reset button, he referred to starting anew from the corrupt politics that had undermined key institutions, brought the economy to the edge of collapse, and stripped millions of people of their voting rights and civil liberties.

The statement explained, "Pressing the reset button is akin to restarting software, without altering the hardware. The hardware, in this case, is the foundation laid by the 1971 Liberation War."

Upon arriving in Dhaka on August 8 to assume the role of chief adviser for the interim government, Prof Yunus referred to the student-led mass uprising in July and August as their "Second Liberation," the first being the country's historic independence in 1971.

At the time of Bangladesh's independence, Prof Yunus was an assistant professor at Middle Tennessee State University. Following the declaration of independence, he formed the Bangladesh Citizens Committee and led a nationwide campaign in the U.S. to advocate for Bangladesh's recognition by the American government.

Additionally, he published the Bangladesh Newsletter to raise awareness globally about the genocide being committed by the Pakistani military, according to the press wing statement.
