58 candidates have had their nominations reinstated on the second day of EC appeal hearings

A total of 58 candidates have regained their eligibility to contest the upcoming 13th parliamentary election after appealing decisions taken by returning officers during the scrutiny of nomination papers.

The Election Commission reinstated their candidacies on Sunday, the second day of appeal hearings, held at the auditorium of Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon, Dhaka.

Confirming the outcome, EC Director (Public Relations) Md Ruhul Amin Mollik said seven appeals were rejected, while six remained pending.

Appeal hearings for petitions numbered 71 to 140 were scheduled for Sunday.

On the same day, the commission allowed the appeal of Md Mohiuddin, an independent candidate from Munshiganj-3, thereby restoring his candidacy. His appeal had remained unresolved on Saturday.

The Election Commission is set to hear appeals numbered 141 to 210 on Monday.

Earlier, on Saturday, 52 appeal petitions were accepted, 15 were rejected, and three remained pending. Of the accepted appeals, 51 were against the cancellation of nomination papers, while one challenged the acceptance of a nomination.

On December 11, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the 13th national parliamentary election as well as the referendum on the July National Charter, both to be held on February 12.

According to the announced timeline, all appeals will be settled by January 18. The deadline for withdrawal of candidacy is January 20, while election campaigning will begin on January 22 and continue until 7:30am on February 10.
