A Dhaka court on Wednesday acquitted cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife, Tamima Sultana Tammi, in a case filed over allegations of inducing a married woman to leave her husband, adultery, and defamation.

The verdict was delivered by Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam. Both Nasir and Tamima were present in court when the judgment was pronounced.

In its ruling, the court observed that the allegations brought under various provisions of the Penal Code could not be established beyond reasonable doubt and therefore acquitted the accused.

On 6 May, the court had set 10 June for delivering the verdict after concluding arguments from both sides. During the hearing, counsel for the plaintiff, Ishrat Hasan, sought the highest punishment for the accused, while defence lawyer Azizur Rahman Dulu argued that the charges were baseless and appealed for their acquittal.

The case was lodged on 24 February 2021 by Tamima’s former husband, Rakib Hasan, with a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.
