Amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring countries, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain stated on Saturday that Bangladesh remains hopeful of establishing a positive relationship with India, acknowledging the reality of the changed situation since August 5.

"We want to remain optimistic that we will be able to build a strong relationship with India while ensuring that our bilateral interests are safeguarded," he said.

Hossain made these remarks at a roundtable discussion titled “Bangladesh-India Relations: Expectations, Barriers, and Future.” The event was organized by the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG) and the Department of Political Science & Sociology (PSS) at North South University (NSU).

The Adviser noted that while Bangladesh has had concerns in the past, and some of them remain unresolved, the previous government made efforts to address India's concerns. He expressed his belief that India would recognize the changed situation, though he acknowledged that there are barriers in any relationship. "There has been a change in relations after August 5. This is the reality," he said.

The roundtable featured panelists such as Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuaad, joint member secretary of AB Party, former diplomat Saquib Ali, Lt Gen (retd) Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, former Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division, Prof Dr Mohammad Abdur Rob, Vice-Chancellor of Manarat International University, and Dr SM Asaduzzaman Ripon, Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The event was chaired by Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of NSU, and moderated by Dr M Jashim Uddin, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science & Sociology at NSU.
