Research, innovation should take priority over political debate: Mirza Fakhrul

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said Bangladesh should place greater emphasis on research, innovation and productive activities rather than political debate, stressing that research outcomes must directly benefit farmers and strengthen the rural economy.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 36th Annual Planning Conference-2026 at the Rural Development Academy (RDA) in Bogura, the minister said technologies developed through research have the potential to significantly boost agricultural productivity but often fail to receive the recognition they deserve.

"Political discussions dominate the national discourse, while the achievements of researchers receive far less attention," he said, urging the media to give greater prominence to innovations that can improve farmers' livelihoods, according to a PID handout.

Earlier, Mirza Fakhrul toured an RDA green technology exhibition and planted a Burmese grape sapling.

The minister said the primary challenge facing farmers is no longer production but securing fair prices for their produce. He underscored the need for increased research on cold storage, preservation and marketing systems, alongside greater private sector investment in these areas.

Encouraging young people to pursue entrepreneurship, he said they should look beyond conventional jobs and explore agriculture-based businesses, including food preservation and marketing, which could generate employment while supporting farmers.

Rural Development and Cooperatives Division Secretary Mohammad Showkat Rashid Chowdhury chaired the event. Among those present were Bogura-5 lawmaker Golam Mohammad Siraj, Bogura-1 lawmaker Kazi Rafiqul Islam, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Md Ehsanul Haque and other officials.
