Students Against Discrimination to Hold Protest Rally in Gazipur Today
Gazipur, Saturday – Students Against Discrimination is set to organize a protest rally today at the Rajbari ground in Gazipur Sadar upazila. The rally will commence at around 1:30 PM, with central leaders of the student platform in attendance.
The announcement was made through an official Facebook post from the organization’s account at approximately 4:00 AM today. The post stated, "A mass rally will be held to protest the attack on Students Against Discrimination organizers in Gazipur by the Awami goons of Mozammel and Jahangir (former mayor). Students and citizens from across the country, along with central leaders, will join the rally."
The protest comes in response to a violent incident on Friday night when a group of enraged individuals attacked the residence of former Liberation War Minister AKM Mozammel Haque around 9:00 PM. According to police and local sources, the attackers entered and vandalized the house in Dakshinkhan, Gazipur city. However, after a mosque announcement alerted locals about an alleged "robbery" at the minister’s house, a crowd gathered, surrounded the property, and assaulted the intruders.
At least 15 people were injured in the incident, with three in critical condition. An army troop later arrived to rescue the wounded and transported them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, while some of the critically injured were sent to Dhaka for further treatment.
In the aftermath of the attack, students staged a protest march in front of the hospital at around 2:00 AM. Md Abdullah, a Students Against Discrimination leader in Gazipur, stated, “We received reports on Friday night that the former minister’s house was being looted. A group of 15-16 students rushed to the scene and saw people engaged in looting. As we tried to stop them, more individuals armed with sharp weapons arrived within minutes.”
He further claimed that students were indiscriminately beaten and stabbed on the roof. When another group of students attempted to intervene, they too were attacked by locals. In response, the student platform has announced a ‘March to Gazipur’ today as a demonstration against the violence.
